Tassilo III.

Tassilo Kelch Duke of Bavaria
* around 741
+ 11. Dez. after 794 in the monastry Lorsch

The son of Duke Odilo from the family of the Agilolfinger and Hiltrud, a Langobard, become after his death (748) Duke of Bavaria himself. At the time the capital was Regensburg. Already 749 Grifo, a rival, replaced him with the help of the Alemann Duke Landfrid. But it was the Frank Pippin III. who restored Tassilo as duke again (757). Very soon Tassilo disconnected from the Franks and expanded his Reich, vertualy independent, over Karantania and North-East Austria.

His marriage with Liutberga, a daughter of the Langobard King Desiderius was the reason for the manufacturing of the beautiful Tassilo-Cup. It still can be seen in the Monastry Kremsmünster, which he founded. This was not the only place he founded or supported: Mattsee, Wessobrunn, Münchsmünster, Innichen, Weltenburg, Chammünster, Chiemsee and Gars are among others.

His saintīs day: December 11
